The Lisnavagh Timber Project Newsletter
October 2004 – Issue No. 9

Welcome to the Ninth Edition of this Newsletter for the Lisnavagh Timber Project.

Firstly, my apologies for such a long gap since the last Newsletter earlier in the year. We have been extremely busy since then and have a lot to report on! New workshop, new office, employee, services, new kiln, new web site… READ ON!!

Please note our new web site address, e-mail address and telephone number:

Our current supplies & stock

Current stocks of hardwood timber total about 2,800 cu ft. We boosted our stocks again earlier in the summer to keep pace with demand, and are now identifying further supplies to bring in.
A Summary of Current Stock and our Price List are now available directly from the new web site. These lists will be regularly updated and can be found at: http://www.irishwoods.com/stockroom/index.htm

Planing, resawing, etc. - NEW SERVICES

We purchased all sorts of equipment a few months ago. This allows us to finish (plane, join, sand, etc) timber and has brought us a whole new line of business.
We have just completed our third set of kitchen worktops and there are further commissions including table tops, bookshelves, more worktops and other items ready for our attention. The waiting list for new commissions is currently about 28 days.

New Assistant

Since the end of March, we have had Eoghan O’Neill with us two days a week to help with sales and production. Eoghan is a well-known wood sculptor who now has his workshop in the Farmyard at Lisnavagh from where he runs wood sculpting courses. (See http://www.irishwoodsculpture.com/). Eoghan’s skills in the workshop, as well as with the database and web site, have been extremely useful in helping this Project to move forward at such a quick pace.

New Workshop

We completed the new workshop a few weeks ago – although we were finishing timber in there before it was completed! It has given us the space we needed and it’s a pleasure to work in it. It’s a busy place!

New Kiln

The kiln (a dehumidifier dryer) was built in the summer and is currently drying its third load of timber. We are thrilled with its trouble-free performance to date.

New Office

We have set up an office dedicated to the Timber Project beside the Dry Room. The database is managed from a computer there, and we have set up a new telephone line (059 9161784) which is dedicated to the Timber Project.

www.irishwoods.com

www.irishwoods.com is the new web site, and we love it! We needed to come up with an easier-to-remember URL than the previous one (which was a sub-directory of www.lisnavagh.com) and we registered www.irishwoods.com in the early spring.
We completed the links into the web site last week and it is attracting a very good number of hits each day now.
With some very useful help from Matthew Rymer in the UK (www.matthewrymer.co.uk), we completely redesigned the web site itself. We believe we have retained all that was good with the “old” web site and incorporated it into the new site, which is far more informative and dynamic.
The website features a full “Glossary of Terms” and a “What We Do” section which explains (in some detail) all of the processes involved in producing timber. There’s also a growing links section. Usefully, our up-to-date stock & price lists can be viewed at the touch of a button.
Also, please visit the Irish Wood Forum which we have set up on www.irishwoods.com. We would like this to become one of the most useful resources for information on timber and woodworking in Ireland… please use it! To help us get the ball rolling, we would greatly appreciate it if you would take a look and leave a message on the forum. You are more than welcome to raise new issues, answer other people’s questions and start new topics!

Sales & Marketing

Sales for 2004 have shown a good increase on the 2003 figures, especially since we obtained the new tools and equipment. The new website is also encouraging further demand.
Matthew Rymer has put together a great looking DL leaflet for us. If you would like some, please let us know and we’ll post some out to you!
Articles in magazines (See the News section on the website), flyers and these newsletters all increase the number of enquiries that we receive.

Resources

To date, our timber has almost entirely come from Lisnavagh Estate, where we are based, although there are some fine specimens from other locations around Ireland which we are also collecting up.

Traceability

LTP offers the most traceable commercially available timber in Ireland, if not Europe… if not the world!
The database which stores all of the information on every piece of timber included in the Project has been developed over the last three and a half years. The functionality of the database is now being improved even further by Eoghan O’Neill, who started working with us in the Spring. The database is the hub of the Lisnavagh Timber Project.

Finally...

Thank you for reading this Newsletter and we look forward to hearing from you soon!

Best wishes,

William McClintock Bunbury
& Eoghan O’Neill
